Gone are the days of carefree enjoyable life @college. No
tension and full of joy. Exams were the biggest celebration or you say festival
of college for which all friends would gather together to collect the material
or wait at the Xerox center with pile of books and notes to be copied.
Collecting material was also like opening an agency where friends were the
members. Toppers at that time would be demanded, searched for getting all the class
notes and ‘IMP QUEST’ (important questions) to be asked in the exam. One of the friend from the group
going to the college to collect the seat number and room number for the exams.
No matter how the exams might be good or
bad, but celebration was like mandatory business for us. Enjoying as if won the
battle. Hooting and dancing, firing crackers on the last day of final exam of
the year.
Umpteen time spend at the parking or say in the cafeteria,
oh gosh no end to our talks. Though there were altercations among friends but all that was temporary.
This friendship was amalgamation of emotions, caress love and ruffle. Even professors were
enrolled in our friendship.
Events and Rock Concerts were a real fun. Treasure Hunt
was one of the favorite event of the
participants. Everyone went crazy to have a snapshot, mostly with an intention
to post it on Facebook . After winning ,waiting
for long hours at the auditorium
either to receive the prize or to cheer friends was left as a purpose .
In all it was fun and also learning at college .But how do you feel for the transition from college
to corporate life? Do the
Corporates demand change in the
life style? Did you realise, you are being watched and noticed for every move
you take ? Does your performance matter to the organization?
The answer to all above questions is YES. So ,what you need
to keep in mind while landing to Corporates? These places are not agora, where
one can behave the way they want , but a sense of maturity and
responsibility are tangible.
Now question might come to your
mind ,how to manage this? Well Corporates can also be a fun only if you mind
your steps.
Offices are like mini-families
because we spend almost 9-10 hours a day in close proximity, sharing the same
office space, facilities, break rooms ,coffee pots ,etc with our work
colleagues. Everyone shares responsibility for making the company work, run
smoothly and stay profitable. And to give the output, one needs to be
contented, only then one can give the performance. Whenever free for say 15
minutes a day, take a round, greet all
the people you know with a smile and exchange pleasantries. It can wear off the
stress most of us go through. Besides, making this effort adds to your
desirability factor at work. And even though it is cliché do remember smiling
is contagious.
Generally we see
people from one country/region tend to flock together . This, quite often leads
to disregard for the other region/country. On the positive side ,it could be
that there is no disregard but just that lack of understanding of each other’s culture etc that leads to differences.
Any excessive flocking/disregard can lead to moral issues which could impact
the productivity. So, mingle culturally with the
employees of all regions and all countries.
In your day to day
execution of your tasks, you do many times come across some better ways of
doing the same task/activity OR you learn something new which could help you
immediately in enhancing your performance. So for every new learning
/discovery, you have 2 options, one is to keep the learning to yourself and
second is to help your peers by spreading these learning. Normally a weak
hearted person would keep the learning to oneself as s/he is not confident of
making newer discoveries to improve performance etc. A strong and confident
employee would share the same as s/he is confident of unearthing newer
discoveries. And the more you share, the faster and better your team performs
and obviously management would want to share higher rewards with you.
You should prioritize
your job daily so that you land up doing the important ones earlier and thus
create an impact on clients, vendors, management, etc. Identify 20% events
which deliver most of the impact and focus on them. That will ensure 80% of
your success. If you follow this, you could land up being part of those 20% who
matter 80% to the management.
Ensure you don’t
become part of any group which is known to garner negative feelings against
certain people and groups. If everyone perceives you as neutral they will leave
you alone and you will not risk jeopardizing your career. Be everybody’s and
nobody’s person.
